2019 Mac Pro - Video Editing Performance TESTED!

Max the day we’re going to take a look at the new 2019 mac pro, and we’re going to see how it performs in video editing now I have to say that this thing is an absolute beast. The build quality is fantastic. I love the design.

It is incredibly silent, shockingly silent, and even the case that it comes in the box with like 30 pounds for the sporty pound machine. I need apple to do a great job now. It is also incredibly expensive not saying it’s worth it to a particular group of people, I think.

It is, but there’s a lot of other options that we’re going to see for a different video, so today I’m going to focus on final cut pro. I think a lot of people will buy the system for a final cut that’s a mac OS exclusive. Of course, some of you guys are going to use premiere or damage results. Still, I want to get this initial article out there as soon.

I can I know you guys are excited you guys want to see how it does and my full in-depth test we’re going to look at the pictures all premiere pro and final cut a lot of different codecs and make some comparisons that. Are going to be out shortly in the future that does take multiple days of testing in the shooting and editing, so make sure you guys are subscribed because don’t miss out on that article.

But I have a lot of great info for you guys now we also did a video taken a look at the thermal performance and a ton of different benchmarks 3 D. animation graphics performance. Some gaming-type stuff that’s over on the Max said channel I’ll leave a link down in the description.

There are some exciting things in a couple of ways that the system stands out apart from like other workstation computers, so let’s jump right in and talk about the configuration here. I already did a video on what configs I recommend for most people. You can check that out.

But I have the 12 core model at 3.3 gigahertz. This has 48 gigabytes of ram in this house read the radio pro Vega 2 graphics card with 32 gigabytes of HBM 2 memory, and that’s what’s going to be very important for video editing.

I also have the afterburner card in the system that’s going to able decoding. Programs and programs Russell we’re going to put that to the test today as well. That’s the option that I don’t know how much people need to spend.

If you work a lot of people maybe but we shall see. The 1 test I don’t want to run for you guys a black magic rock crew is the black magic recipe test here we could see right away we’re running EKG decoding it out 114 frames per second and that’s getting close about four streams of Multicam 8 K. and if we take a look at 4 K.

We have 400 and 59 frames per second, so that’s close to 20 streams of 4 K. multi camp black magic rock. I also want to give you guys a reference point of performance for the system, even though. I don’t want to get into benchmarks as far as CPU performance. This thing is getting about 50 to 55 percent more CPU performance then R. I. mac pro, which has an eight-core CPU clock speed, is also running higher.

Which is excellent, and as far as graphics in geekbench fives metal square, this thing was about 85 percent faster, but we shall see how it performs an actual video editing.

First, let me give a huge thanks to the microcenter for making our mac pro content possible microcenter has 25 stores. Nationwide with an impressive variety of electronics from gaming VR computer parts like processors graphics and everything else needed to build or upgrade a PC or mac microcenter has been an apple authorized dealer since 1980.

They have a dedicated apple department with highly trained apple sales associates. Aside from the iPhone, a microcenter carries the full lineup of Apple products and has the largest selection of third-party products, and accessories for mac and iPad come into a local microcenter.

Today and talk to 1 of their apple experts to order iMac pro configurations that best suit your needs check. The link in the description to find a location near you or browse all of micro centers apple products online let’s start with the easy stuff. This is footage from the A. 7 S. 2.

We do have some color corrections of 2 lots applied to this and feel great as well. Playing it back, this is at best quality no issues whatsoever; in fact, our CPUs only running at 2 percent. A graphics is running it was just 6 percent would back went 9 percent right now I’m exporting this 5-minute project we’re up to 6 percent CPU usage and 19 percent graphics card usage so here we could see that this system is overkill if you’re editing with standard 4 K.

Compressed H. I. 2644 H. or X. H. I. 265 took 2 minutes and 31 seconds for a 5-minute project twice as fast as real-time, so that’s not a big difference. But I’m not pro also isn’t limited by graphics or by the CPU is just limited by the encoder in the graphics card the older generations so here both systems have a straightforward time in the MacBook Pro isn’t that much lower either.

It’s good to see that this new AMD graphics is faster we do see some improvement because with those guys that don’t know back in 2013 the last mac pro is quite a bit slower than the MacBook Pro and I back when you’re exporting this type of simple.

It’s good to see these new graphics cards. You’re no longer slower at exporting even if you could edit faster now. Let’s do a similar test with H. I. 265 HEVC this will use the T. 2 chip that’s inside. The system, and just as I expected, the time is the same as the iMac pro because they’re both using the same T. 2 chip.

The rest of the components have no issues with this footage now let’s jump into its head bit H. D. is playing this back there are no issues whatsoever everything’s perfectly smooth. I have a couple of lots here were still at 4 percent CPU 8 percent GPU not back to 2 percent CPU no issues at all whatsoever but the issue.

That people are having is when you’re trying to export this because with the previous machines, there’s no acceleration for the exporting has. To be CPU only took the new graphics card forever in the new MacBook pros 60-inch ones in this system have a 10 bit it colder.

I don’t know if I look at is using it yet it might still be software so let’s take a look all right, so that’s 35 minutes which is a long time for a 5-minute project that is not an issue with the system at all it’s an issue with a final cut at the I’m not project X. 45 minutes, so we do see some improvement.

There but this system was even using half of the C. P. U. ultimately, we need for Apple to release version 15 of the final cut for HDR HEVC 10 bit exporting with the graphics card.

Because a project like this should take somewhere between 2 to 3 minutes to export now, let’s get into the harder tougher stuff here. I have 4 K. 60 frames per second footage from the canon C. 200. This is raw footage. Some corrections applied.

I have a lot of play here as I expected and as it should for this amount of money it is playing back perfectly smoothly the graphics card is running at 67 percent. The CPUs running at 27 percent so no issues whatsoever playing this back on other system say as the mac pro would Max out the graphics card.

If you add more corrections in a fax in titles in this, you will get some choppiness some stuttering it. It’s Max out at 60 FPS was here you should be able to do multi-cam 2430 FPS C. 200 Rossi 3 streams of it exciting, so we’re exporting this. I’m used to seeing the CPU the graphics card be maxed out with this footage in here our graphics card is running at 67 percent as well and our CPUs running at 28 percent this is the 12 core configuration.

This is weird. I’ve never seen this not be maxed out, so for the first time, 4 K. 60 C. 200 rod is not the limitation is the income. The order that took 5 minutes for a 5-minute project in comparison I’m not pro takes closer to 8 minutes, so that is a pretty significant improvement, but not just that alone the CBN graphics are maxed out.

The where the I mac pro is maxing out in its limit at that speed this has way more overhead if you want to do multi-cam if you’re going to affect more animations harder stuff more and I’ll still do 5 minutes.

Because right now the limiter is the encoder we’re just taking it one to one that is good news for those guys who work with the Sportage if you’re exporting a 20-minute doc you know you might be able to ship it in 10 to 15 minutes if it’s 24 or 30 frames per second not bad at all.

So we’ll take a look at that a bit more in my full detailed video and now seek a look at red rock this is 4.5 Kate playing it back perfectly smoothly CPUs at 76 percent right now 58 dropdowns.

The jeep you kicked up to help out now so bounce that out 25 percent on the graphics no issues what so ever and now I do want to say once again that Apple is going to release and dreads new metal API.

Whatsoever that fast here’s the afterburner card this is worth $2000, let’s set it down carefully right over here start playing this same back project now at the Cebu has about 21 percent usage.

The graphics card is still about the same took off 20 percent of C. P. usage running this, and everything was processed here instead of a not went up slightly. Let’s try to go back and forth super smooth still.

I mean, it has no issues, and this is why I was saying in my configuration guide that hold off from buying the afterburner card one make sure we tested out because the CD is already so dominant in the system. Programs rise so efficiently with the final cut.

Then you might not need it. You might have enough horsepower even with the 12 core possibly even eight courts which also leave the twelfth okay so the renders about halfway done here. We’re ready almost on a minute 45 seconds, so the afterburner cart is helping it took 2 minutes and 52 seconds that is fascinating interesting so.

I guess I’ll have to do a lot more testing on the afterburner card different plea back enough to for. Fines of 8 K. ProRes raw footage if you guys have some, please let me know in the comments section.

That way, I can test it out with that and give you guys a better verdict on if it’s worth it or if it’s not, so that is it guys let me know your thoughts down in the comments section below what. They got to point out is that this thing was completely silent the whole time I literally cannot hear it unless my ears like an inch away and even.

Then it’s so subtle quiet it is shocking. We pushed it in our other video, Max, if you sell it to the limits, we Max out the CPU and the GPU at the same time for an extended period I’ll just let you watch that video at the link is down below so thanks again to microcenter for making.
